Florida License Plate Renewal

What Is License Plate Renewal in Florida?

Renewing a license plate in Florida reaffirms your existing registration for another period without changing the plate number or the metal plate itself. You receive a new registration certificate and a sticker to confirm in the upper right corner of the plate (Florida FLHSMV Motor Vehicle Registrations). The transaction is separate from titling; no title transfer occurs upon renewal.

  • Passenger cars, light trucks, motorcycles, trailers, and motorhomes renew on a one-year cycle, with a two-year option at the owner’s discretion according to Florida Statutes § 320.07.
  • Registration expires at midnight on the owner’s birthday. Vehicles owned by businesses follow a fixed schedule set by FLHSMV, not a birthdate.
  • Florida does not impose a separate registration fee for electric vehicles according to the current published fee schedule.
  • No inspection limits renewal. Florida requires neither safety inspections nor emissions testing for passenger vehicles.

When Do You Need To Renew Your Florida License Plate?

Renewal opens 90 days before the expiration date listed on the registration certificate. County tax collectors send a renewal reminder postcard approximately three months before the owner’s birth month (FLHSMV Renew or Replace Your Registration).

  • Early window spans from 90 days before expiration to the actual birthday.
  • A short grace period follows: no late fee is assessed until the 11th calendar day of the month after the birth month, according to Florida Statutes § 320.07(3)(a).
  • Once a fee is assessed, the penalty scales with the license tax amount. Registrations with a tax up to $25 incur a $5 penalty; those exceeding $25 and up to $100 incur $10. Penalties rise to $250 for the heaviest commercial classes.
  • Since Florida fully skips inspections, no test result blocks the renewal portal or office desk.

How To Renew Your License Plate in Florida

Before choosing a channel, confirm your Florida insurance is electronically verified in the FLHSMV database. Any registration stop (child support obligations, traffic violations, lapsed insurance) must be cleared first; fees discussed in the next section cannot be paid until the stop is resolved (FLHSMV Electronic Services).

  • In person: visit any county tax collector’s office statewide. Bring the renewal reminder postcard or your plate number, proof of Florida insurance, and payment by cash, check, credit card, or money order. The office prints your registration card and issues your sticker on the spot.
  • Self-service kiosks operated by Florida MV Express are available in participating counties for quick renewal without a line.
  • Mail: send the renewal notice, a check or money order made payable to the county tax collector, and proof of insurance to your county tax collector’s mailing address. Allow 7-10 business days for processing and return mail.
  • Online renewal is conducted through MyDMV Portal or GoRenew portal. You verify your identity, plate number, and insurance status before payment.

County office locations are listed in the FLHSMV office directory.

How Much Is License Plate Renewal in Florida?

The base renewal is a smaller portion of the total bill; legislative service fees, surcharges, and county add-ons raise most receipts above the base tax amount.

  • Passenger cars pay a license tax based on weight: $14.50 (up to 2,499 pounds net), $22.50 (2,500 to 3,499 pounds), or $32.50 (3,500 pounds and over), according to Florida Statutes § 320.08.
  • Motorcycles renew at a base rate of $10.00; mopeds at $5.00. Trailers up to 500 pounds have a base rate of $6.35, while private-use trailers above this threshold pay $12.00.
  • A $2.50 service fee (Florida Statutes § 320.04), $0.50 FRVIS fee, $0.50 reflectorization fee, $1.20 juvenile justice fee, and $10.00 state transportation surcharge are added to each renewal. The total annual amount on the FLHSMV License Plate Rate Chart (HSMV 83140) reaches $27.60 for the lightest cars and $45.60 for vehicles weighing 3,500 pounds and over.
  • Discretionary county fees vary. Florida does not set a uniform statewide local surcharge; each county tax collector publishes its own schedule.
  • Late surcharges start at $5 and rise to $250 depending on the license tax class.
  • Specialty and personalized plates have annual additional fees assessed at renewal. A personalized plate adds a legislative surcharge to the base registration.

Can I Renew My License Plate Online in Florida?

Online renewal covers passenger cars, trucks, motorcycles, trailers, mobile homes, and vessels for one or two years. MyDMV Portal accepts credit cards and charges a $2.00 processing fee per transaction. Confirmation can be emailed immediately and serves as proof of registration until the physical card and sticker arrive in 7-10 business days.

GoRenew portal offers the same renewal service. The MyFlorida mobile app, available on iOS and Android, adds the option to pay by checking account for a $3.75 processing fee (credit card transactions in the app cost $4.00). Any registration stop blocks the online path; the system will not issue a renewal until the stop is cleared.

When the portal denies renewal, visit any county tax collector’s office in person. For mail renewal, send:

  • A completed renewal notice or your plate number and registration details.
  • A check or money order made payable to the county tax collector.
  • Proof of current Florida insurance.

If FLHSMV can process your renewal online, this path costs less and arrives faster than any alternative; the office handles what the portal denies.
